When searching for potential culprits of your vulvar pain, toilet paper might seem an unimportant candidate for this title.
But believe me – toilet paper (often stuffed with harmful and toxic chemicals) can be one of your main problems causing your v irritation, puffiness, allergies, and pain. And yes, it can also be one of the main reasons of your vulvodynia. In the end, you use it every single day – sometimes even several times per day!
It was one of my problems too. After spotting this, I freed myself from the dry and raw feeling that accompanied me every day.
In this breakdown, I have listed toilet papers that either I or my fellow vulva warriors have tried, and in which I was able to find further precise information about; through the brands’ websites or reviews online.
I haven’t included any virgin toilet papers (papers that are made straight from trees) because first, they always tend to have random chemicals and additives in them, like lotions, fragrances, dyes, etc. And second, they are not environmental friendly.
RECYCLED TOILET PAPERS
Recycled toilet paper is a good, environmentally friendly choice to consider when choosing toilet paper for your sensitive v.
Before switching to bamboo toilet paper, recycled and unbleached toilet paper was my main go-to option.
Here are a few essential points to keep in mind when choosing recycled toilet paper as an option for your v:
#1. Seventh Generation 100% Recycled, Chlorine Free
(Available in the US and Canada)
This Seventh Generation toilet paper is a good eco-friendly choice for your sensitive vulva and vagina. This is 100% recycled paper containing 50% post-consumer and 50% pre-consumer content.
It is bleached with oxygen using the Processed Chlorine-Free (PCS) process – which means that your vulva won’t be exposed to chemicals like dioxins. This toilet paper is hypoallergenic, free from fragrances, perfumes, softeners, chemical irritants, dyes, inks, and formaldehyde.
Even though it might be rougher that virgin toilet paper, the company claims that the paper is created with sensitive skin people in mind. It dissolves very quickly, which is great if you have any plumbing issues.
#2. Seventh Generation Unbleached
(Available in the US and Canada)
Another good eco-friendly choice for your sensitive vagina and vulva. This 100% recycled paper contains 80% post-consumer and 20% pre-consumer content and is totally unbleached. Like its predecessor, it is also hypoallergenic, free from fragrances, perfumes, softeners, chemical irritants, dyes, inks, and formaldehyde.
According to user’ opinions, it is relatively soft in touch, easy on the skin, and durable so it can be a great solution for your vulva irritation. Plus it is easy on the pipes.
Company Information
Seventh Generation is an American eco-friendly company established in 1988. The company is focused on sustainability and the conservation of natural resources while producing environmentally friendly, non-toxic products.
#3. Green Forest 100% Recycled
(Available in the US)
- 2-ply
- Average sheet count: 352 sheets per roll
- Average sheet size: 4.5” x 4.0” (11.5 x 10 cm)
Green Forest toilet paper is made of 100% recycled toilet paper. It contains one of the highest post-consumer recycled (PCR) content of any brands, reaching up to 90%. It is whitened using a chlorine-free whitening process (PCS), so it’s a gentle option for your vulva.
It’s hypoallergenic, free from fragrances, perfumes, added dyes, and lotions. Unfortunately, on the producer’s website, I haven’t found any information about formaldehyde.
According to user reviews, it might be a bit rougher than other brands, however, it is still relatively soft, with average strength and is absorbent when wet.
It is biodegradable and easily breaks down, so it is a good choice if your home has heavy bathroom traffic. It is a good, economical and environmentally friendly option for sensitive skin.

Who Gives A Crap recycled toilet paper is made from 100% recycled paper with no dyes, inks, scents or lotions.
The company claims to source their materials from local schools which includes textbooks, workbooks, and office paper and because of this, their paper doesn’t include BPA (although they can’t offer a 100% guarantee.)
According to reviews, this toilet paper is softer and sturdier (it doesn’t leave pills or particles behind which can irritate the vulva), is tightly packed (i.e., more toilet paper per roll) and is more efficient than other recycled papers.
The con is the whitening process in which WGC toilet paper is treated with hydrogen peroxide along with Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) bleaching. ECF, unfortunately, produces dioxin which might be a source of vulva and vagina irritations.
WGC papers are biodegradable, they are ok for almost all septic tanks and truly eco-friendly – they’re wrapped with paper printed with soy ink.
